A
fire broke out in the duct, housing electric cables on the second floor of the
12 storey State Life Building housing offices of the Karachi Electric Supply
Company on the 28th of November 2012. As the fire had broken on the
2nd floor it quickly spread to the top floors. Although 800 of the
people in the building managed to escape through the emergency exit the young
man did not make it. Due to the serious situation at hand the man panicked and
to escape went out through the vent and clung to the window. The police and
rescue resources came to the site but nothing was done and all watched the man
fall to his death.
The
large crowd that had gathered at the site, instead of just standing there could
have done something to prevent the man from suffering such a horrendous fate.
The job of the police and the rescue departments is to protect people and
control the situation, not just stand and watch. An inquiry has been ordered by
the government and has ordered the administration to take all preventive
measures for the safety of the employees and provide medical treatment for the
affected.
To
conclude it is time for the people of Pakistan to wake up and start to help
each other rather than doing nothing, and prevent such problems in the future.
