Basant: Bash or Blood : Still a controversy?

There has been a controversy on basant event in Pakistan, some resident of Lahore are in the favor of and some are against to the ban on kite flying. As it’s an occasion of happiness. Some are of the view that its good to have a ban on basant in Pakistan as it kills people and some says that it’s not even a part of our culture we adapt it from INDIA, but some are of the view that instead of banning basant government should have focused on banning chemical string for kite-flying that caused harm to human life and government should control the preparation and sale of metallic string.

I’m personally against to the ban on kite-flying as I mentioned above it’s an occasion of happiness. Therefore, nobody had the right to deprive others of happiness. Furthermore, it causes massive unemployment as this event was profit earning business activity. Rather smuggling chemical string, kites and other accessories of Basant from neighbor countries, local market could be given the chance and by this mean income generation and small level business industry could be flourishing on local level.

It’s a high time we should draw a fine line between so called fanaticism and religion. We, entertainment starved nation badly need some opportunities to get together and have some fun according to our religion and customs. Our religion does not deprive us from the right of being happy. As religion dislike extreme of any kind.
Kite flying was regulated under the Punjab Prohibition of Kite Flying Ordinance 2001. However, activity had been banned in 2010 by the Lahore High Court. Kite-flying should continue, but in accordance with the law. What remains to be seen is whether the number of deaths caused from kite flying declines as a result of regulation.

  1. Basant used to be my favorite celebration but unfortunately the problem of corruption again arises here because of the 'sheeshay wali dooor' many people die =/ so its a good thing to ban this festival :)

  2. Basant is still my favorite event and yes it has had its ups and downs but this doesn't mean you ban something which not only has cultural importance but is also a great source of employment. Banning is just like running away from the problems. Something like basant needed to be saved. And this could only have been done by the cooperation of the government and the public.

  7. Basant is one of our old traditional festival celebrated few years in ago in full boom especially in Lahore. I would say its a colorful festival but we didn't bother how many lives it took away from us just because of the people who use the typical 'Sheesha wali Dor'. Government should take action against those who made this and banned them If not then banned it forever because no one like that any one can die just because of this.

  8. Basant is season celebration and i would call it Basant Bahaar. It must be allowed to celebrate but in its true spirit and for limited time. All hazardous material should strictly be banned before relaxing the ban on kite flying especially in Lahore city to avoid any un-pleasant incidents during the celebration of Basant Bahaar. I appreciate the efforts made by the author for getting the issue high lighted.

  11. I personally beleive basent is a very fine way of meeting and interacting with your neighbourhood. On this special day almost every roof is filled with different people, in one way you judge what type of people lives under these roof. You choose good neighbours and interact with them. In recent time, the trend of knowing your neighbours is continuously decreasing at an alarming rate, which is not good for the society. So one day for knowing and celebrating a day with you your neighbourhood is definetly not a bad idea.

  12. yeah agree with you basant should not be banned...do they ever put ban on driving cars?? as alot of road accidents took place everyday, basant is a festival of colours, joy, happiness it should not be banned however the use of illegal string should be strictly banned.

Basant is a beautiful and one of my & i think our favourite festival which brings happiness and colours in our life, and of course it's a great source of revenue as well. in my opinion, Basant should not be banned and our government should make some safety measures to protect human life, Like our previous government introduced safety wires for bikes. Although, people should also celebrate the occasion under there limits to save the most important thig, "human life".
In the current time of sorrows and uncertainty we need such kind of joyful occasions to spread the happiness and joy among the nation.

  14. All festivals mark the cultural identity of any nation n Indo-Pak simply cannot shrug off the influences both nations have on each other for years now. Its quite immature to term a regional cult and giving it any particular national identity such as Basant being termed as 'hindu' festival. If that is creating a havoc in our lives that Indian movies n soap dramas of Star Plus should be banned too!! We're living in times when the world is finding ways to come together celebrating the differences n we are still in a habit of looking for more ways to hate our neighbour. Basant is not only a beautiful festival but it was such a massive revenue generating time of the year for country's economics too n it was still ONE event which encouraged host of foreigners to make their way to Lahore despite the security situation. The ban should be on the negative n life threatening aspects related to the kite-flying/making, not on the festival itself.

  15. Well, i believe strictly banning a festival just for government's negligence is a mere disappointment. This shows government's attitude and interest. just think about times when our fathers and forefathers celebrated this festival. There was less or even no news of slaughtering of kids on bikes etc just because the string material used was not that used at our times also the kite size was not bigger than the small 'Taawa' that exerts less stretch in string. other side of this scenario, Pakistan was earning a lot of revenue and foreigner import was so much enhanced. In a nut shell, we should always see towards the positive approach and neglect the negative side and move forward to provide easy and fun entertainment to civilians. Strive for a solution rather ban.

  16. Love KITEFLYING Without Blood - Missing Basant as a Lahoriyaaaa.. :'(

  17. its a good way to get together and enjoy but i believe basant should have a specific area to celebrate like an open ground far away from the residence and cities should be there and within its range everything should be performed.

    ReplyDelete
  18. well it is just a celebration, I think we should be sensible enough to respect others choice and freedom.

  19. It should be made legal. Their were so many businesses relying on this Event. We had so many tourists coming from all over the world. Apart from this, their is hardly any activities, amusement parks, shopping malls, or any other place where the people of Punjab could go and actually enjoy their time. Having Basant as a Festival really diverted their attention from the tough boring routine. They actually found a way to spend some good time with freinds. I strongly believe that this festival should be given life again.

  20. Promotion of safe and healthy entertainment measures is a vital pillar for the growth of a nation. It not only provides an opportunity for relaxation but also freshens up the human mind to undertake bold and positive decisions with a broader perspective in the vested interests of national development. In a country like Pakistan, with low literacy levels, low social values, less maturity, and high extremist ratios, poor infra-structure; kite flying can not be a safe play. Govt should focus on establishing alternate and more halthy sport facilities like basketball/volley ball courts, football fields, tennis/badminton/squash courts etc in every block and every corner of residential societies. This will also act as a catalyst in culmination of social evils like drugs, theft, hooligans, and the factors leading to terrorism.

  25. Basant is one of the festivals which i like and yes i agree that basant should not be banned but instead government should do something about chemical strings and they should not be used...

    ReplyDelete
  26. government should take steps to ban that"sheeshe ki dour" instead of banning basant..government should focus on the solution of the problems rather than avoiding problems

    ReplyDelete
  27. it shouldnt be ban as its not only the event of happiness its also the way of earning livelihood for lower middle class... government should also pay attention to the other factors banning is not the solution

    ReplyDelete
  28. umMmm... to some extend its good to ban it.. there was a time when every minute we heard that this person, that person died of chemical string

    ReplyDelete
  29. As u've mentioned that basant is a way through which people get happy and basant is for one day only so if kit flying made legal for one day then its not a bad thing. totally in favour of the fact that so many people got died due to kit flying but that one day of basant govt can ban bike ..

    ReplyDelete
  30. If Basant can be celebrated in a safe way without people losing their lives then the government should lift the ban and allow it to be celebrated but make sure that safety measures are being implemented.

  31. It's an amazing article, Rakhshan! I believe that if Basant is celebrated in a decent manner and if people actually keep in mind the value of other people's lives, this event can be celebrated in a much more civilized manner.

  32. banning it is not the solution government should focus on its precautions.. it shouldnt be ban as it generates revenue for our country n its also the event of happiness, no one has the right to deprive others of happiness

  33. Basant is an awesome festival. You cannot ban basant. The use of deadly wires should be ban. Take the example of a knife, you can cut an apple or kill a man with the same knife, so what should you ban?? a knife or its wrong use?? think about it people :)

  34. banning such activities is not the solution to the problem...people should celebrate this event but strict actions must be taken against the illegal stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  35. what should i say...??? our government is hopeless.. they would've focus on finding the solution of problem instead of avoiding it...

    ReplyDelete
  36. i'm in the favour of banning basant... number of people died bcoz of that chemical string.. n thats because of corruption arises by this event... people tried to earn as much as they could no matter how..

  37. its a adorable event.. it shouldnt be ban.. but yea precautions should be taken... to avoid deaths banning is not the only solution

  38. I would prefer unleash the restriction over the Besant event. Unless something is forbidden in Muslim culture there is nothing gauche in doing so. Precaution should be made in use of kite string. String those catastrophic should be forbidden but people should be granted to celebrate this festival.

  39. i am againt to the banning of basant why people always involve religion in celebrating this event.. there are so many things happening which r non-religious then y only basant be banned

  40. i believe all the things should be ban which cause harm to human life so yes m in the favor banning basant

Basant was a great event,it was one of the major attractions for tourists...!! Finishing a subject is not end of problem. Unfortunately, many ppl died in this event last year, our government should have restricted ppl for illegal selling of Basant products... but banning basant completely is not the proper solution to the problem!!

I agree with Mr.Furqan many ppl died but its a failure of our govt. They should manage a place for this event. Many skilled person who make kites and dor are job less. but my point of view is Basant should be promoted
