I saw Pakistanis crying as they waved Flags

October 30 2011 , Lahore stood together and united for one cause which was to "bring a change" .I personally managed to witnessed it. Those few hours standing among the crowd i felt my ethnic, provincial, and even professional identity being absorbed by my national one. It felt good to be a Pakistani.

You just had to be there. I was. And I stood there, among the crowd, and looked at the sea of people shouting, clapping, laughing, dancing and waving flags.

It was mesmerizing. It was electrifying.

Minar - e -Pakistan Jalsa
People just kept coming , men , women , teenagers , children's and even families were present. They were all there. Everyone was pumped was and Minto Park ignited into deafening roars , drumbeats ad motivational music. The atmosphere was unreal. This was like no other jalsa. It had shaken Pakistani Politics and Politicians to the core. Those five hours on October 30th in the city of Lahore, under the shadow of the Minar-e-Pakistan, have transformed the struggling dreamer into a political rock star.

Politicians at that time could only say "it was a good jalsa , but it is not like he has won the election". It is true , he might still have a long and shaky road infront of him but what he did that night was remarkable. He bought some hope in the eyes of all Pakistanis. All Pakistanis present at that jalsa felt something different ,  they and I both imagined a future draped in colours of hope. This was not due to any one-sideness or political loyalty but was a mixture of emotions visible in the form of collective yearning. This yearning was for a better life ,  for justice , for peace in a society in which every man, woman and child enjoys equal opportunity. A yearning for equality before law and an end to exploitation. A yearning for dignity, for tolerance, and for the protection of the weak.

For those few hours , I felt my ethnic, provincial, and even professional identity being subsumed by my national one.All my internal conflicts , contradictions , sarcasm , bitterness and hatred had seemed to melt away and i experienced a warm glow and happy emoticons formed up . At that time it felt good to be a PAKISTANI .

Can you imagine this feeling ?Every living moment Pakistan is bombarded with negativity. Terrorism ,corruption , injustice ,exploitation and topped off with devastating effects of the collapsing economy. In Quaids country , life has been nasty. Anywhere you go, the world disrespects us and the green passports sparks red alerts. We envy India, we hate the US and we beg in front of the Saudis. As a result, we are made to feel like we have no self-respect. This feels bad and it hurts.

But the situation was different that day . We all felt good.Tens of thousands of fellow Pakistanis, together under one huge green and white flag, dreaming of a better tomorrow .I saw Pakistanis crying as they waved flags, swayed to the tunes and yearned for a shore that glows in the distance. They cried for the broken promises, for lives ruined and for a future that their kids deserve but may not get. But they also laughed, danced and screamed because they felt one, bound together by a failed past, and a hopeful future.

This was way beyond politics. This was about being Pakistanis, pure and simple , I - Pakistani .Nothing else matters. This was a clear message for all those who say Pakistan is a failed state. That evening, Pakistan the concept, was right there in front of the whole world, living, breathing and screaming.

The rally is over but its hangover hovers in the air. Soon it too will disperse. But that flash of emotion we all felt that day , being there at Lahore's Minto Park will keep burning a small but intense flame inside of us , a reminder that there is dream call Pakistan.

And it is still very much alive.

Now is the time that we stand united and work towards bringing the Quaid's Pakistan back !

  1. Time's like these bring the people of our nation together but most of the time we are up against each other. Therefore, in order to bring our Quaid's Pakistan back we should hold on to the same feeling so that we stand united, now and forever! well written my friend

  2. A very good and influential article Indeed. But i think nowadays people, "more precisely our youth", have quite a biased point of view about Imran Khan like he is THE only one who can bring the change.

  3. It is certainly heartening to see a Pakistani politician inspire such optimism, especially among the educated youth of Pakistan, which, from my personal experience usually tends to stay apolitical when it actually comes to taking substantial political action. i too happened to be present on the said occasssion and i too felt a wave of optimism punctuate that warm Lahore air many a times that night. it actually felt right, showing solidarity and unity under the banner of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. i must admit that i am no die-hard fan or propagandist of Imran Khan's youth revolution and there are many things of his with which i do find issue yet, but i still hope that he comes into power come the elections. i really do want to see how good he comes on his words. He must be given a taste of real power so that the nation can see if he is truly incorruptible or not. i would use this space to make one concluding remark. This nation of the Quaid can only begin to really hope if we all get serious about making social change our number one priority instead of political change. if we let this degenerative state of social affairs continue in Pakistan, then neither Imran Khan nor anyone else will be able to do much about it.

  5. close to reality article, but me myself,is not a imran khan supporter, but the gist is who could give us back the pakistan, which was actually meant for peace, sanity, supporting, love, brotherhood, and a seperate identity of being a PAKISTANI.
the crowd is enthusiastic and supportive towards imran khan, lets hope my personal roughness proves to be wrong for imran khan, and may he be the leader who could lift this country well.
overall a thoughtful yet realistic article, keep it up!..

  6. Emotion. That is what I got from that article. It does not do well to dwell on ideas, notions and promises alone. The fire that you and thousands of others felt for those couple of hours, needs to now be moulded into something useful. Because, your passion is ineffective if it only comes into play at events like this. It needs to take direction, it needs to be reflected in the work that you do and the changes that you try to make. That is the only way we can progress, and change pre-conceived notions of negativity and terrorism amongst others, that people may have of us as individuals and as a nation.

  7. We all just need to believe in ourselves. The most amazing and extraordinary nation in this world. It's about time we all stood up as a nation and tell the world we are PAKISTANIs. And no one takes us for granted.a great effort put into this article, and a job very well done.

  8. An influential article indeed that is not based on the general assumptions and stories surrounding us these days rather on a personal point of view of what the writer felt after attending the particular event. If all of us believe that we need a change in our country, we really need to do something substantial and different from what we have been doing in the past years i.e VOTE! Sitting at home and discussing politics or even criticizing the government is not what is going to bring a change. It is feelings and emotions like these that need to be translated into actions.

  9. Pakistan is passing through a very critical time and unity has never been of greater importance; however unfortunately the scenario is complete opposite to that. In such times any one who manages to bring this divided nation together deserves appreciation. I have never been a big fan of Imran Khan 'The politician'; but i will always give him credit for reaching out to the educated youth of Pakistan, and introducing to Pakistan a more civilized politics. I wont go as far as saying that Imran Khan will make the future of Pakistan, because no one can do that for us until we as a nation decide to change, however I would like to see whether he is as good as he says he is.

  11. I wasn't present at the gathering mentioned above but history has witnessed it many times over that there is more to Pakistanis than corruption, suicide bombings and injustice. We Pakistanis are driven by emotions, we need nothing but a cause to achieve it. All is not lost yet!

  18. A very well written article. The reality is as was portrayed in the article, the chances are highly unlikely that there may be a good future in present circumstances. The very feeling of awe that the writer and everyone present there felt, need not be suppressed by the recurrent waves of realities but what we need right now is an effort, a sheer determined effort to bring the change we all want to see in your country.

  19. Should give IK a try. He's got the will and the commitment. Just lacks a bit on the technicalities, but Im sure he'll work on them too. Better than Nawaz and the pseudo-Bhuttos, any time of the day!

  20. well written...the writer has a good grip over his words and has successfully executed his thoughts through this article. I personally take the least of interest in politics and politicians, but those who do may read this article for a loyalty boost as the content is quite motivational and enthusiastic.

  21. "The rally is over but its hangover hovers in the air. "

Being an oversees Pakistani i can personally confirm how elated everyone here was to see the lahore rally. Everyone in Canada was so excited , I can not even begin to fathom what it would have been like in Lahore itself.

Rekindle the spirit. Its still not too late . Dont count the number of days , but make the number of days count.

  26. I witnessed it too, yes it was unlike other jalsa's and it made people realized where they are standing today and where they should have been standing. Imran Khan is a good hope to bring the Pakistan which Iqbal dreamed of. Their is something in IK which makes people love him and expect alot from. Lets hope for good lets make Imran Khan the President of Pakistan.

  27. This really showed the world that the people of Pakistan has changed their perceptions of voting the same ruling families and has diverted to vote new faces. The atmosphere was absolutely electrifying. One could easily see it in the eyes of the people who attented the jalsa that the Change was coming..
